Find where the water is getting in
I’m Johnny, based in Ingbirchworth near Penistone. I take on roofing and gutter work across Barnsley, Holmfirth, Denby Dale, Stocksbridge and nearby areas. A stain inside tells you water has reached the ceiling. It does not always show where the water first entered the roof. That is why I want to look at the cause before talking about a patch.
Water can travel along the roof structure before it shows indoors. Tell me which room has the mark, when you first noticed it and whether it changes after rain. You do not need to identify a tile or work out a repair yourself. A description of what you have seen is a useful place to begin.
Underneath the roof tiles
The job photographs show a section of roof with the tiles lifted so the membrane and battens underneath could be put right. The finished photograph shows the tiles reinstated. The covering and its supports need considering together, rather than treating the visible surface as the whole roof.
I can explain the scope after looking at the job, including access and whether scaffold is needed. If scaffold forms part of the work, I tell you when quoting. Please do not go onto the roof or use a ladder to take photographs. Send what you can see from the garden or the street and leave the work at height for assessment.
Chimneys and flaunching
Flaunching is the mortar around the chimney pots. Cracks there can let water into the stack. Problems around the chimney may be hard to spot from below, so tell me about any damp patches near the stack as well as anything that looks different outside. The gallery includes my own photograph of renewed chimney flaunching.
If you can see a pot out of line, a gap or a change around the base of the chimney from the ground, describe it when you contact me. Keep clear of anything that looks loose. I will discuss what needs looking at and tell you plainly if part of the job is outside the work I take on.
Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits
The roof and rainwater goods work together. A blocked gutter or a downpipe that is not carrying water away can send rain against the building. I clear gutters, replace downpipes and take on fascia and soffit work. If water spills over during rain, note where it happens and send a photograph from a safe position.
Tell me whether the issue is at one corner, along a whole run or where two sections meet. Mention any staining on the wall beneath it. These details help me understand what to look at when I visit. You do not need to wait until you know which fitting is at fault before asking about the job.
A clear scope and a written price
I give free, no-obligation quotes, with a fixed price in writing for most jobs. The quote explains the agreed work so you know what is included before I start. If the job turns out to be more involved once a section is exposed, I ring you before doing extra work.
I spent twenty years as a mechanical engineer before working on the tools full time. I work alone, so the person who quotes is the person who does the work. I clear up after the job. Read about me or see what customers wrote for more context.
If a ceiling looks damaged or sagging, keep clear of it and mention that when you get in touch. I do not do gas work, including gas appliance flues. Check the areas I cover, browse the job photographs or tell me about another repair on the services page.
