The boards are only part of it
I’m Johnny. I take on deck repairs, board replacement and new deck builds across Penistone, Barnsley, Holmfirth and nearby areas. The finished boards are what you see, but the posts, bearers and joists underneath decide what those boards are sitting on. I look at the whole arrangement before suggesting a repair.
On one job, a bearer had decayed underneath a deck that still looked usable from above. That is why I want to know what is holding the deck up. Tell me where yours moves, when you first noticed it and whether any boards feel soft. Please keep off any part that feels unsafe and only send photographs you can take safely.
Repair what can be repaired
Not every tired deck needs taking out. If the frame is sound and a few boards need changing, I can replace the affected boards. Where there is local decay in a support, I assess whether it can be cut back to sound timber and new stock spliced in. The repair needs to deal with the cause of the movement as well as the visible surface.
Where a post has moved, I can bolt the connection through the bearer. The supplied job photographs show that detail. If there is more decay through the frame, a rebuild may be the sensible route. I tell you what I have found and explain the scope so you can decide with a clear picture of the work.
A garden deck from strip-out to finish
The garden sequence on this page shows one deck being rebuilt. The old boards and damaged frame came out first. Membrane went down, followed by treated joists, with the levels checked before the finished boards went on. It is the same garden throughout the sequence, so you can see how the finished surface relates to the work underneath.
I also take on steps, balustrades and built-in seating as part of deck work. If you are planning a new layout, tell me how you want to use it and where it meets doors, paths or the lawn. Those relationships matter when agreeing the shape and access. The existing ground and any old paving need looking at before the frame is planned.
Timber, upkeep and the scope of the job
My decking work includes sanding, staining and non-slip treatments as well as construction and repairs. Tell me whether the problem is the surface, a loose section or the whole deck. A new finish cannot make a decayed support sound, so I check the structure before treating the visible boards.
The decking cost guide discusses timber and composite choices, preparation and access. Materials should be chosen for the particular job and their own care instructions. If you want a raised deck or a change to the layout, check any permissions with your council before the work is agreed. I do not take on gas connections for outdoor appliances.
A written quote for your deck
Two decks of the same size can need different amounts of work once the old boards are lifted. I come and look before quoting. Send a photograph of the whole deck, an approximate size and a close view of the affected section. If you can already see underneath safely, a photograph of the frame helps too. You do not need to crawl under it.
Quotes are free, with no obligation. For most jobs I give a fixed price in writing. If anything hidden changes the scope, I talk to you before doing additional work. I work on my own and clear up after the job. You can see customers’ words, check my local patch or ask about a neighbouring path or patio at the same time.
