Start with what holds it up
I’m Johnny Stott, the person behind Home Helpers Yorkshire. I work from Ingbirchworth near Penistone. If your fence is moving, send me a photograph and tell me where it feels loose. You do not need to diagnose it before getting in touch. I come and look at the posts, the panels and the ground around them before deciding what needs replacing.
A panel can look sound while the post has decayed at ground level. Fitting a fresh panel to that post leaves the original problem in place. When the posts are sound, a panel replacement can be the whole job. When they are not, I explain what needs doing underneath before talking about the finish.
A repair or a new fence
I take on panel replacements, post repairs and full fence installations. Closeboard, feather-edge, lap panel, picket, trellis and bespoke designs are all options I work with. The right choice starts with what you need the fence to do, where it sits and how the ground changes along the boundary.
I use concrete posts and gravel boards to keep timber clear of wet soil. They also let panels be replaced without taking out the entire fence line. I can explain the construction when I visit, including which existing parts can stay and which need changing. There is little point choosing the visible panels before knowing the supports are right.
For sloping ground, panels can be stepped or set to follow the slope where the design allows. Tell me about any changes in level and send a wider photograph of the run. I will look at the layout with you before agreeing the work.
Gates that close properly
I fit new garden gates and rehang gates that have dropped. A gate needs a sound post and a square opening. If it catches on the ground or will only shut when lifted, I look at the support and the hinges as part of the same job. You can ask about a gate on its own or as part of a new fence.
Think about how you use the opening before I visit. Tell me if it needs to take a wheelbarrow, give access to the garden or work alongside a path. Those details help us agree a useful layout rather than choosing a gate by its appearance alone.
What goes into your quote
The length of the run, the height and style, the number of posts, access and the ground all affect the work. Old fence removal needs agreeing too. Let me know if materials have to come through the house or along a narrow side passage. A photograph from each end of the fence is useful when you first contact me.
Quotes are free. I put the agreed scope and price in writing, with a fixed price for most jobs. If the work turns out to be more involved than it looked, I speak to you before doing anything extra. You can read the fencing cost guide for planning considerations, then ask me for a quote for your actual garden.
One person on your job
I spent twenty years as a mechanical engineer before working on the tools full time. I work alone, so you deal with me from the first conversation to the finished job. I clear up after myself. If your fence sits beside paving that needs attention, I also take on patios and path repairs.
My usual patch includes Holmfirth, Denby Dale, Stocksbridge, Huddersfield, Wakefield and the edge of Sheffield as well as Penistone and Barnsley. Check the areas I cover or tell me your postcode. The gallery shows my own work. Boundary ownership and any permissions should be settled before work starts; check your documents and ask the relevant council if you are unsure.
